Let's talk about Locs
Locs are more than just a hairstyle — they’re a statement of culture, confidence, and natural beauty. Whether you’re starting your loc journey or maintaining mature locs, understanding different techniques and care options helps you achieve healthy, beautiful results.
Everything To Know about locs

Retwisting is one of the most common methods of maintaining locs. It involves tightening the new growth at the roots to keep your locs neat and uniform. Depending on your hair texture and growth rate, retwists are typically done every 4–6 weeks. Using lightweight oils and hydrating gels can help hold your style while keeping your scalp nourished. At T&T Hair Spa, we don't use heavy waxes or gels.

Interlocking (or “latch hooking”) is a low-maintenance alternative to retwisting. It involves pulling the end of the loc through the root to secure new growth, creating a long-lasting hold. This technique works well for active lifestyles or for those who want less frequent maintenance, as it helps prevent unraveling even after washing. This service is typically done every 8-10 weeks.
Starting Price $185+

Color is a fun way to express your personality through your locs. From subtle highlights to bold hues, coloring can enhance your overall look. However, it’s important to keep your locs moisturized and use color-safe, sulfate-free products to prevent dryness or breakage. Always consult a professional colorist experienced with locs to avoid damage. At T&T Hair, we always provide a consultation before providing any color services to be sure you are educated and you hair is ready for this type of service. We provide continued education, maintenance, and products to be sure your new look is a success!
Starting Price $75+

Loc extensions are perfect if you want instant length or want to skip the early “budding” stage of loc formation. Made from human or synthetic hair, extensions can be added seamlessly to blend with your natural locs. They’re versatile and can be styled, washed, and maintained just like natural locs with proper care. Loc extensions last for an average of 1-2 years. They can be easily removed and replaced. T&T Hair Spa provides consultations for loc extensions to discuss length, color, texture, density options, and pricing. The average turnaround time for an extension appointment is 1-2 weeks.

Loc Styles offer endless styling possibilities from elegant updos and braided crowns to twisted ponytails and freeform looks. Styles can be dressed up for formal events or kept simple for everyday wear. Regular moisturizing, gentle styling, and protecting your locs at night with a silk scarf or bonnet help maintain their health and beauty. T&T Hair Spa's Specialty is helping you find the style that's just right for you and your current mood.

The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Locs: Retwists, Interlocks & Healthy Habits
Congratulations on your loc journey! Whether you're a newbie with starter locs or a veteran with a mature set, proper care is the key to healthy, vibrant hair. At Tendrils & Twigs, we believe that what you do between appointments is just as important as the service itself.
This guide will walk you through the essentials of caring for your locs, with special sections on maintaining retwists and interlocks.
General Loc Care
These fundamental practices apply to everyone, regardless of your maintenance method.
Shampooing: Clean Locs are Healthy Locs
The myth that you can't wash locs is just that, a myth! Clean hair locs better and prevents buildup, odor, and itchiness.
Frequency:
New Locs (0-6 months): Every 2-3 weeks to prevent unraveling.
Mature Locs (6+ months): Weekly or bi-weekly, as needed.
Technique is Key:
Use a residue-free, clarifying shampoo.
Dilute the shampoo in water to make it easier to apply.
Focus on massaging your scalp, not aggressively scrubbing the locs themselves.
Rinse, rinse, and rinse again! Leftover shampoo is a primary cause of buildup.
T&T Hair Spa provides all the products you need for your hair care including shampoo, conditioner, scalp refresher, oil, and mousse.
Drying: Patience Prevents Mildew
This is non-negotiable. Water trapped inside dense locs can lead to mildew and an unpleasant smell. As always Tendrils & Twigs is here to help you out to get rid of such problems.
Always: Squeeze excess water out with a microfiber towel (it's less linty than cotton).
Always: Contact professionals before it leads to a serious issue. Tendrils and Twigs provides advice and guidance towards having healthy hair.
Moisturizing: Hydration without Heaviness
Locs need moisture, but heavy oils and butters cause buildup.
Do’s & Don’ts
Do: Use a light, water-based spray. Mix water with a few drops of a light oil like jojoba or grapeseed oil in a spray bottle. Spritz your locs and scalp between washes.
Don't: Avoid heavy pomades, waxes, and gels. They clog your scalp and create flaky, sticky buildup within the locs. In such cases, Tendrils & Twigs provides loc detox and scalp exfoliation treatments.
Protect Your Locs at Night
Reduce friction, frizz, and breakage while you sleep.
Always: Sleep with a satin or silk bonnet, or use a satin pillowcase.
For longer locs: You can loosely tie them up with a satin scarf or use a loc bonnet. T&T Hair Spa supplies all of the items you need to care for your locs.
Care and Maintenance
Caring for a Fresh Retwist
A retwist uses tension on the roots to create a neat look. Proper care ensures the style lasts and your scalp stays healthy.
The 24-48 Hour Rule: Avoid getting your hair wet for at least 24-48 hours after a retwist. This allows the hair to "set."
Beware of Over-Maintenance: Retwisting too often (e.g., every week) can lead to traction alopecia and thinning at the roots. We recommend waiting 4-6 weeks between retwists to allow your hair and scalp to rest.
Caring for Interlocked Locs
Interlocking creates a durable, internal lock. The care focus is on the points where the interlocking occurs.
Gentle Handling: While strong, the interlocked node can be a point of stress if pulled too tightly. Be gentle when styling.
Watch the Tension: During your maintenance sessions, ensure the interlocking tool isn't pulled too tightly, which can cause breakage over time.
Longer Lasting, Not Zero Maintenance: You can extend the time between appointments, but don't go too long. As new growth accumulates, the weight distribution on the loc can change, potentially causing stress. A typical interlock maintenance schedule is every 8-10 weeks.
Washing & Drying: The same rules apply, but you have more freedom to wash without worrying about unraveling.
Know What to Avoid: The "Don'ts" of Loc Care
Over-Manipulation: Constantly re-twisting, playing with, or re-styling your locs causes stress and breakage.
Product Buildup: This is the #1 enemy of healthy locs. It weighs them down, prevents moisture from getting in, and can lead to odor.
Tight Styles: Consistently pulling your locs into tight ponytails or buns can cause traction alopecia at the hairline and temples.
DIY Chemical Treatments: Leave coloring to the professionals. At-home bleach can severely damage the internal structure of your locs.
